Our Paediatric Diabetes Team continually works hard to meet the individual needs of our children and young people with diabetes. Our priority is to deliver a gold standard service by working in partnership with our families. The team maintains excellent links between patients and families, hospital and GP, inpatient and outpatient departments, school, college, nurseries and with the Young Person’s Clinic for when young adults leave the paediatric service.
We aim to teach children and their families the skills and knowledge they need to manage their diabetes well so they can live the life they want to. We regularly liaise with our colleagues in different paediatric diabetes services across the North West to ensure we are providing best practice. We are part of the North West Paediatric Diabetes Network where we share ideas and develop best ways of improving diabetes services nationally. The diabetes team takes part in the annual National Paediatric Diabetes Audit, and from this we continue to make improvements and drive our service forward.

As a diabetes team we work hard to help children and their families manage their diabetes confidently and appropriately. The team offer specialist tailored advice, guidance and structured education from diagnosis in a supportive and holistic manner. We take into account the way they want to live their lives and the things they want to do as much as possible. We aim to be supportive, non-critical or non-judgmental, and to be available for advice, in person or by phone, throughout the week Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. After this time or on a bank holiday or weekend, a young person or family can obtain advice about their child’s diabetes by ringing the on-call paediatric registrar. We offer a robust insulin pump service, which is continuing to grow. We can offer insulin pumps to all children and young people giving them choice of pumps with the latest technology. We refer to NICE guidance for our pump criteria when selecting children and young people. Technology is ever changing and we now offer Flash Glucose Monitoring (Libre) and Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in accordance with local guidance for individual children and young people who are suitable.
We prepare our young people from the age of 12-14years about transition to adult services. We try and prepare them as well as possible for life as young adults and are always sorry when the time comes to transfer them onto our colleagues in the Young Person’s Clinic.
