New measures to increase services at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

Our staff have been working hard to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and ensure the safety and quality of our services for all patients.

Just like the rest of the NHS, our number one priority for the last few months has been ensuring that all those who need emergency care – not just those with coronavirus – have been able to get it when they need it.

Combined with the need to avoid unnecessary contact to reduce the spread of the virus, this has meant that some non-urgent appointments and surgeries may have been postponed, and others delivered differently using technology.

We are now preparing to gradually increase some important face-to-face services, but only where this can be done safely – the virus is still circulating and we do not want to put our patients, the public or our staff at greater risk.

If you are waiting for an out-patient appointment or waiting for a test or a surgical procedure, we are currently prioritising the most clinically urgent patients.

It is likely to be some time before we are able to commence any treatments that are less urgent.

If you are on our waiting list for surgery then we will be writing to you shortly to provide more information.

What does this mean for me?
Planned care
We will continue to ask patients to attend face-to-face services only when it is really necessary. Where possible, appointments will be offered using remote services such as a video or phone consultation.

If you do need to attend hospital for planned (non-emergency) care, you will be asked to take some steps to ensure you can get the care you need in an environment that keeps you, staff and other patients safe.

Outpatient appointments
You should only attend your outpatient appointment if you have no symptoms of coronavirus. Face coverings need to be worn by patients, visitors and staff at the hospital and you will need to comply with this when arriving on site. We will provide face masks for those patients who arrive without one. You may have your temperature checked when you arrive at the hospital as an additional precaution.

We are asking that you do not bring anyone to the hospital with you so that we are able to minimise the number of people on site. If it is essential that someone does accompany you, then please let the booking team know.

While at the hospital or clinic it is important that you comply with normal social distancing requirements. We have guidance at reception desks and in our clinics which will support you to do this.

If you are currently shielding because you are at high risk of complications from coronavirus, but need to come to the hospital or the clinic for planned care, extra planning and protection will be put in place. This will be discussed with you in advance.

Admissions (including day surgery)
If you are being admitted to hospital you will be asked to isolate at home for 14 days prior to your admission date. You will be asked to complete a coronavirus test 72 hours before your admission date and our team will advise you of the details of this when they are arranging your admission date.

If you are unable to isolate effectively or be tested before coming to hospital, your admission may be rescheduled. This will be determined by your care team using clinical judgement and in consultation with you. Our admissions team will give you all the information you need when booking you.

You may have your temperature checked when you arrive at the hospital as an additional precaution. Face coverings need to be worn by patients, visitors and staff at the hospital and you will need to comply with this when arriving at the hospital. We will provide masks for those patients who arrive on the site without them. Please note that currently visitors are not allowed to attend the hospital so it would be helpful if you could make your family/friends aware of this.

To help prevent the spread of infection we are asking patients not to leave ward areas to go to the on-site shops and absolutely not to arrange with visitors to meet outside of the hospital and then return to the ward areas. This puts other patients and staff at risk.

You have a vital part to play in keeping our hospital environment safe and therefore please follow all the instructions that you receive from us.
If you start to show symptoms of coronavirus or test positive while admitted to the hospital you will be immediately isolated to ensure the safety of other patients and staff.

We are continuously monitoring what is happening with the coronavirus pandemic.

All planned care is subject to developments in the pandemic response and appointments may need to be rescheduled.

Getting help in an EMERGENCY

Our Emergency Services are there to respond to illness/injury which are potentially life or limb threatening and require immediate medical attention. Our Emergency Services are all available. If you are told to go to hospital, it is important that you go. Staff have worked hard to ensure that the care you need can be provided as safely as possible.

When arriving at the Emergency Department you will notice some changes. These include:

  • On arrival, you will be assessed for symptoms of coronavirus and identified as having no symptoms (asymptomatic), possible symptoms of coronavirus, or confirmed positive for coronavirus (if you have already been tested).
  • You will be asked to wear a face-covering or face mask.
  • Please note that currently visitors are not allowed to attend the hospital so it would be helpful if you could make your family/friends aware of this.
  • It is important that you comply with normal social distancing requirements and follow guidance you will see around the hospital site and clinic areas.
  • If you need to be admitted to hospital, you will be tested for coronavirus. If you are still in hospital 5-7 days after admission you will be tested again.
  • To help prevent the spread of infection we are asking patients not to leave clinical areas to go to the on-site shops and absolutely not to arrange with visitors to meet outside of the hospital and then return to the ward areas. This puts other patients and staff at risk from transmission of the virus.

Getting help when an URGENT need arises
Our Emergency Services are there to respond to conditions which are potentially life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. There are of course other circumstances in which urgent, rather than immediate help and advice is required.

We are trying to reduce the number of patients attending the Emergency Department, to maintain social distancing and reduce the risk of transmitting the virus. This is to protect both patients and staff.

If you need urgent medical help, please use the NHS111 online service or call 111. The NHS111 call handler will ask you a series of questions to establish what your best course of action is. They may transfer you to, or arrange a call back from, a clinician for further advice, before referring you to the most appropriate service.

You should call 999 in an Emergency.

 

Safer Staffing

High quality, compassionate care is about people, not institutions. In every ward,department and community setting

nurses, midwives, health visitors and care staff work to provide care and compassion to people when they need it.

Compliance 

Compliance with the NHS Improvement Provider Licence

As part of the regulatory system for NHS Providers, the Board  must annually consider its compliance with the conditions set out in the Provider Licence. At its meeting on 23rd May 2018, the Board agreed the following statement in respect of Condition G6 related to compliance-

 

Following a review for the purpose of paragraph 2(b) of licence condition G6, the Directors of the Licensee are satisfied that, in the Financial Year most recently ended, the Licensee took all such precautions as were necessary in order to comply with the conditions of the licence, any requirements imposed on it under the NHS Acts and have had regard to the NHS Constitution.

Not fully compliant.


The Trust cannot declare compliance under this condition as it has continuing Enforcement Undertakings to NHS Improvement, which are predicated on the Trust not being fully compliant with the conditions of the Licence. 

 

CQC Rating and Inspection

The CQC visited our Trust in April 2019 and reported on their findings in July 2019.

Spiritual care

 

Current Chaplaincy Support: Covid-19

With the current situation around COVID-19, the Chaplaincy department has updated how religious and spiritual support is provided. At the moment:

  • All bedside visits have been suspended
  • The Multi faith Prayer Rooms have been shut

Religious and Spiritual support is still available for patients, families and staff. Please call the Chaplaincy Department via the switchboard on 0161 922 6000. A 24-hour on-call telephone service to patients, staff or families in need of spiritual support in difficult times is currently available. The on-call service will also be able to contact appropriate chaplains if there is urgent spiritual or religious support.

Alternatively you can call the chaplaincy department on 0161 922 5333 and leave a message for someone to get back to you.

 

 

We offer care and support but you can choose the level and nature of that support. It is freely available to all, whether you are have a faith or not. We provide spiritual, emotional and religious care and we want you to keep in touch with who you are while you are in hospital.

The Chaplains are employed by the NHS. You can expect to be treated with privacy, dignity and confidentiality by us at all times.
