Video consultations provide extra choice for patients in Tameside and Glossop

One thing that has increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic is the use of digital solutions to keep in touch with our friends, family and colleagues.  The NHS has also been able to use technology as an opportunity to still have appointments with patients, if appropriate, using video consultation.

In Tameside and Glossop we are offering video consultations to some patients who have been identified by their healthcare professional as someone who may be suitable for this type of appointment, depending on their individual care needs.  Video consultations are easy to use and are often more convenient – saving you time and money. Video consultations are being used across GP surgeries and also now in outpatients at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Your doctor or nurse will discuss the option of having your consultation via video if it is suitable for your care. This is generally the case where;

  • a physical examination or an on-the day test is not needed
  • a patient is travelling a long distance to attend their appointment
  • a patient is undergoing regular, scheduled care that is disruptive to everyday life
  • it might be useful to see the patient’s home environment or their at-home medical devices
  • a patient is unable to attend hospital due to a physical or mental health condition.

We understand that it may not be possible for you to conduct your appointment via video, or that you may not want to.  If this is the case, please let us know and we can arrange for your appointment to be conducted in another way.

At the hospital the video consultations forms part of our response to COVID-19, in that we want to reduce the number of people coming into hospital to make sure we reduce the risk of infection. The system we are using is called NHS Attend Anywhere.  This is a secure web-based platform for patients with pre-arranged video consultation appointments. You can use the platform on any PC, Mac or iOS/Android device, using Google Chrome (for PC/Mac/Android devices) or Safari (For iOS devices and Macs).  The video platform does not take a recording of your consultation and we recommend that patients connect to their home or work Wi-Fi to avoid using their mobile data allowance.
