Targeted Lung Health Checks Programme
13 May 2019

The NHS Long Term Plan published on 7 January 2019 included a new ambition to diagnose three out of four people with cancer at an early stage by 2028 – up from around half now. To help deliver on this ambition, the Plan also committed to the extension of targeted lung health checks across England. The programme builds on approaches trialled successfully in Manchester, Liverpool and countries overseas. 55 to 74-year olds who have been smokers will be invited for a lung health check and, where required, a low dose CT scan. During the Manchester trial, 65% of lung cancers were diagnosed at stage 1 and 13% at stage 4, compared to 18% at stage 1 and 48% at stage 4 before the trial.

Tameside and Glossop has been selected to take part in the first phase of the extension of the Targeted Lung Health Checks programme from 2019-20 and funding has been set aside for Tameside and Glossop to fund our involvement in the programme.
